Lecture 33 Lesson 1

The Origin and Development of Eurythmy
Why Eurythmy? What do you develop through your eurythmy practice?
The practice of eurythmy is the most powerful tool I know to counter the seductive effects of materialism and technology. Even 5-15 minutes (or longer!) of eurythmy DAILY gives you a somatic reminder of what life is really about: living FULLY on the earth with an awakened and active spiritual consciousness.
We will begin our September series for this year with a four week course that parallels our Tuesday class, opening with a study of what how eurythmy began in 1912, as a kind of rebirth of sacred temple dance, and grew from there to become a profound immersion into the living thoughts of Anthroposophy. In eurythmy, every single gesture engages us in our Physical, Etheric, Astral and Ego sheathes. We learn to pour our awareness out of mere cognition into our hearts and into our will, so that the body becomes a true vessel for and an expression of the Cosmic Creative Word.
The effect of all of this is re-connect us to our spiritual sources in the macrocosmos, bringing them as health-bringing forces  into our bodies. Those who practice eurythmy daily can experience its powerful integrative power, as body, soul and spirit awaken to work in harmony with one another.

In addition to its eurythmy curriculum, Eurythmyonline offers weekly Thursday evening lectures on a wide range of anthroposophical topics, including The Nature of the Human Being, Life after Death and Before Birth, Human and Cosmic Evolution, Living Healthily in an Age of Technology.

Lecture 33 Lesson 2

The Origin and Development of Eurythmy
Revealing the Shaping and Penetrating Forces of the Etheric World
In this second lecture of our series, we see how Rudolf Steiner introduced three new major elements into the instructions given to the first eurythmy students.
First, he introduced the laws of syntax, or grammar, and showed how the structural laws of thinking, which are fundamental to sentence building and to expressing thoughts, can be made visible in eurythmy. Specific forms were shown for nouns (differentiating concrete and abstract noouns; verbs (contrasting active, passive, and duration); prepositions, adjectives, articles, and more.
Next, he introduced forms that have a "cosmic" dynamic, thereby beginning to a foundation for the fundamentals of relating eurythmy to the macrcosm. He also showed specific gestures for each of the different planets and their corresponding vowels, and to each of the signs of the zodiac and their corresponding consonants.
Finally, he began to show the first elements of how to present musical elements in eurythmy. although this was a very primitive beginning for what later began to flourish.
Thus, with an extraordinary abundance of new content, the new art of eurythmy was beginning to flourish.

Lecture 33 Lesson 3

Eurythmy as Visible Speech
What is this new art that focuses on making speech visible?
In this third lecture of our series, we focus on the formative forces of the sounds of language, which derive from cosmic, pre-physical formative forces and are at the very root of our world and of our humanness. We learn that our etheric body is constantly moving, shining, glimmering, and changing its shape with lightning speed as we speak and as we listen to speak. The shapes that it makes are the shapes we make doing eurythmy, and are at the same time the formative forces that have sculpted our own bodies and the world around us. As we get to know the World-Word we pernetrate to the source of what it means to be a Human Being, a bearer of the Logos.
